About This Spot

Stepping into Death In The Afternoon feels like slipping into a story whispered through shadows and soft jazz, nestled right on a lively corner of Mills Avenue. The air hums with a measured energy — a kind of easy, deliberate pulse where craft cocktails meet a moody, almost literary vibe. It’s a space designed for slowing down but not retreating; a place to unwind in the quiet moments between conversations or dive deep into the night with friends who appreciate an adventurous sip.

The pace is unhurried but alive. Low lighting and rich, dark interiors invite you to settle in and explore the thoughtfully curated menu, which blends classic cocktails with unexpected twists. Here, absinthe isn’t just an ingredient — it’s a muse, inspiring drinks like the signature Death In The Afternoon and other artfully balanced concoctions. If you lean into the bar’s spirit of discovery, you might find yourself reaching for a tart Pisco Sour or savoring the smooth warmth of a Manhattan with a twist.

Food feels just as intentional as the drinks. Rather than a side note, dishes like the chorizo burger or pork belly carry the same kind of playful confidence — balanced, full-flavored, and designed to complement the cocktail journey. Whether you’re nibbling on patatas bravas or indulging in seared scallops, the kitchen’s approach feels personal, invited, and set against the quietly energetic backdrop of a community hub.

What truly lingers is the atmosphere — a mix of easy camaraderie and thoughtful care. Service here feels attentive without pressure, the kind of hospitality that knows when to chat and when to give space. It’s no surprise that many find themselves returning, drawn by the steady rhythm of a place that values the craft of connection as much as the craft of the cocktail.

I went in for a a couple of drinks with a friend to celebrate my birthday. Had a Mezcal Mule and I highly recommend it. The vibes are great here and the staff is great as well. Very attentive and got our drinks out in a timely fashion. I will totally be coming back to try the food and some more drinks for sure.

Death in the Afternoon is an amazing cocktail spot right in the heart of Mills Ave. One of many great places in the area, but this one really stands out. The cocktails are top-notch, the food is just as good, and the atmosphere is super chill. I love coming here right after work — it’s the perfect spot to unwind before a busy night. Everything about this place just hits right. Definitely a favorite.

I can always get behind a book themed bar and a macabre spot! Great cocktail bar with lots of creative and delicious cocktails and great bartenders! Went to try death in the afternoon but the winner for me was the Brooklyn. A Manhattan with cherry liqueur. As a Manhattan fan I was excited to see it and even more excited to taste! Delish! Moody dark interior and great service! I recommend making a reservation especially on the weekend so you’re not stuck on the standing bar.

Food and service was impressive and I’ll definitely be back! I had steak and frites, ordered it rare and it was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Well done DITA!!

We really loved our visit to DITA. We sat at the bar and our bartender was friendly and gave us recommendations which was really helpful, especially when you have limited experience with absinthe! We also ordered the Jamon puff pastries which were delicious [photo attached] Highly recommend.

Lovely place to enjoy a delicious pour of absinthe! Bartender was friendly and just attentive enough. Nice selection of absinthes to choose from. Decor/vibe is just right. The only nitpick is that I wanted to louche my drink with one of their fancy absinthe fountains, but they were all leaky/broken so I got stuck with the carafe— C’est la vie lol
